The Importance of Getting Your Zzzz’s – Study Says Sleep Disorder Could be Sign of Alzheimer’s Disease
We’ve been told that poor sleep interrupts the natural process of our brains to eliminate waste and calibrate memory but now scientists believe that poor sleep could be a risk factor for Alzheimer’s. Two new studies have looked at the levels of beta amyloid and tau protein in cerebrospinal fluid and whether poor sleep leads to higher levels – both said yes. The first concluded that higher risk people with the apoE4 gene or a parent with Alzheimer’s who reported a history of bad sleep, had more of the biomarkers for the disease. The second found the same thing in healthy middle-aged adults after interrupting their sleep for just one night.
